Perhaps our name “Llanishen Good Neighbours” does not best describe the area we serve, but you’ll probably agree that “Lisvane, Thornhill, Llanishen, Heath, Roath Park, Lakeside, a bit of Birchgrove and most of Cyncoed Good Neighbours” doesn’t have quite the same impact!!

We were formed in 1981 by the Council of Churches. As usual, in those days, we owed our existence to a small band of committed individuals who saw a need and responded. Although we are now an independent registered charity, perhaps what matters most is that the ethos of the organisation hasn’t changed at all since that time and our links with local Churches remain as valued and as strong as ever.

We work alongside Social Services, Age Concern, Hospital Discharge etc. and are seen as a good example of a true community scheme where services (about 3,500 jobs each year) are provided by local people, for local people. Based in an office at the bottom of Heol Hir, Llanishen, our services are available to anyone who has a genuine need for them and primarily include transport, shopping, and companionship.

We work very hard to ensure that we provide a reliable service, delivered in a professional way which respects the privacy and dignity of both volunteers and clients, but at the same time utilises a caring and friendly approach reflecting the individual needs of our clients. Whilst we are grateful for (and dependent on) the voluntary financial contributions we receive, we make no charge for our services and no client should feel obligated to pay.

We have certainly grown a lot and, in one way, our success is our biggest challenge in that whilst we have 80 or so volunteers lending their support, we really do need more. Could you help? You make the rules in respect of what you do, how often and when, and you can change your mind at any time, and say “no” when asked, so flexibility is very much the order of the day.
